LSE Research Showcase Summer Series- Proxies: the cultural work of standing in with Dr Dylan Mulvin
Our world is built on an array of standards we are compelled to share – where some bits of the world end up standing in for other bits in order to facilitate the design of technologies and services. But how are those standards determined? Drawing on his new book, Proxies, Dylan Mulvin will share some stories from the history of technology to show the way technologies, standards and infrastructures inescapably reflect the cultures that created them, and how those with the power to design technology, in the very moment of design, are allowed to imagine who is included—and who is excluded—in the future. Come along to find out more about the people who clean kilograms to make the metric system run; the women who pose as test images; and the actors who embody disease and disability for medical students.

These 30 minute coffee-break sessions are open to the LSE community so that you can find out about some of the fascinating research taking place at LSE. Short talks will be followed by an opportunity to ask questions.
